Agrivoltaics: how it works
Configurations and scientific evidence.
Agrivoltaics, also called agrophotovoltaics, combines photovoltaic generation and farming on the same plot. The key is intentional design: panel height, spacing and tilt are chosen with the crop, livestock or pollinators in mind.
Common configurations
- Elevated: high panels; machinery or livestock pass underneath.
- Vertical bifacial: vertical rows that leave the field open between them.
- Inter-row: crops between and under the panels.
- Grazing: animals under the panels.
- Solar greenhouse: modules built into the roof.
What the evidence says
- In a trial in Arizona, under panels, cherry tomato yield doubled and chiltepin tripled; jalapeño yielded the same with 65% less transpiration water loss (Barron-Gafford et al., Nature Sustainability, 2019).
- Fraunhofer ISE reports land-use efficiencies of up to 186% compared with separating crops and solar plants.
- Mexico receives on average about 5.5 kWh/m² of solar irradiation per day (Global Solar Atlas).
Results depend on the site, crop, climate and design. That is why AMAYAD promotes pilots, data and good practice rather than promises.
